In the Eight Mansions system the sitting of the house should ideally match the Kua number of the breadwinner. In the Flying Star system house are graded based on their facing direction and period of construction.

You cannot apply both systems as the same time as there are bound to be conflicts. In practice you should apply one system throughout.

The most important thing to do in determining the Feng Shui house direction of a property is to be able to differentiate between sitting and facing.

Every house has a facing and house direction.

The facing direction is the orientation of the facing of the house measured in degree. The sitting direction is always magnetically opposite the facing. So if a house is facing 5 deg then the sitting is 185 deg.

Why is it important to identify the house sitting and house facing correctly? Most Feng Shui system makes use of either the sitting or facing direction (plus other factors) to determine the chi distribution in a house. If you make a wrong assessment of the house facing or house sitting, then the subsequent recommendation will be incorrect.

In most houses the facing and sitting are easy to identify. In some cases however, it can be quite tricky but when you are in doubt, you can use the following guidelines to determine the house sitting and house facing.

- The main entrance is usually the facing.

- The street address usually corresponds to the facing.

- Traffic is usually heavier at the facing.

- The larger windows are usually at the facing.

- The living room is usually at the facing side of the house.

- The back-lane is usually correspond to the sitting.

- The backyard is usually the sitting.

The orientation of the main door can be different from the facing of the house (more on this in the next article). Please note that in systems like the Eight Mansion and Flying Star, the sitting or facing of the house is used to determine the chi distribution of the chart, not the orientation of the main door. A lot of people are confused about this!

In the Eight Mansions system houses are divided into the East and West Group. Houses that sit N, S, E and SE belong to the East Group while houses that sit NW, SW, W and NE belong to the West group.

An East group person should ideally live in an East house and vice-versa. I emphasize 'ideally' because there are techniques to overcome if your Kua and house do not match your kua.

In the Flying Star system, houses that are or will be built in the current period between Feb 2004 and Feb 2024 are known as Period Eight Houses. During this period houses with certain facing are considered to be auspicious.

The best facings are SW1, NW2, NW3, NE1, SE2 and SE3. Houses with these facings are know as "Prosperous Mountain Prosperous Water" houses and are good for wealth and relationship. Houses that face SW1 and NE1 are also good and are known as "Combination of 10" houses.
